If you love animals (and you probably do if you are reading this!) then it can be very appealing to think about a career that involves working with animals.  But we have all heard about those who start off in a vet clinic, and get put off by blood and stuff.  But there are many options when it comes to working with pets, from grooming, training, pet sitting, education, wildlife warrior  … all the way to being a specialist surgeon for reptiles.  You could work in a zoo, in a vet practice, on a farm, rescue organistion, a university, a school … really the list is endless – which is good as it provides options, but can also be confusing!

To help you decide whether a career with animals is right for you, or which career with animals is the best fit it’s good to explore the options in advance.  You will discover that whatever you choose, working with animals can be very rewarding but also demanding as it requires a lot of hard work and commitment.

To help you could start by getting some work experience in the field, or volunteering – both good ways to explore the options, especially if you haven’t worked with animals previously.

Check out the rescue organisations sponsored by Petsecure, every single one of them would need a helping hand, and there are many ways to help – from simple dog walking, cleaning, or even office administration.  I even saw recently of a cool programme where young children are reading to dogs to help them calm down – it’s a win-win.  If they don’t have anything like that in your area, what about starting it up in your area?   Of course if there isn’t a shelter on the list that is close by you, chances are there’s a shelter somewhere in your vicinity.  If you live in the country, how about asking the farmer if he or she would like a helping hand?  These sort of experiences can help you see what you love and what sort of animals you really enjoy being around.  You can also get some ideas of which direction appeals to you from websites that offer courses.

Just remember, the more experience you have the better placed you will be to find your passion.
